Liverpool will reportedly have to shell out more than £60million to beat Newcastle to the signing of Brighton ace Moises Caicedo. The midfielder is attracting interest from a whole host of clubs due to his impressive performances on the south coast and at the World Cup.

Brighton signed Caicedo from Ecuadorian club Independiente in early 2021. The 21-year-old made three appearances for the club’s under-23s side during his early days at the American Express Community Stadium but was shipped off to Belgian team Beerschot at the start of last season.

Caicedo spent just four-and-a-half months in Belgium before being recalled by Brighton. And he was thrust into the Seagulls team by former boss Graham Potter towards the end of the last campaign, starting his side’s final eight Premier League matches.

The player has missed just 11 minutes of Premier League action this season and has been a key reason for Brighton’s success. The Sussex outfit have climbed to seventh in the Premier League table after winning seven matches this term.

According to Ecuadorian publication Tera Deportes, Liverpool are the team with the strongest desire to land Caicedo and have made the most formal offer. But Brighton resent the offer as it falls short of their valuation of the star.

The Telegraph have explained that Brighton are demanding well in excess of £60m in exchange for Caicedo. So the Reds will have to get out the chequebook if they are to get their hands on their man.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is desperate to bring in another midfielder after guiding his team to third in the Premier League and is eyeing up Caicedo, who played for Ecuador at the World Cup. But they could be denied a move as Brighton are reluctant to do business with the Magpies after they poached director of football Dan Ashworth from the south coast.

Liverpool have already announced the signing of Cody Gakpo from PSV as they look to turn their ailing season around. The Reds are sixth in the table after failing to win on eight occasions in the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp’s team trail fourth-place Tottenham by five points but have a game in hand. And the Merseyside giants will be hoping for a precipitous upturn in fortunes in 2023 if they are to have any chance of securing Champions League qualification next season. The Reds have, however, booked their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League and are set to go head-to-head with Real Madrid in the last 16 of the competition.
