Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has backed Brendan Rodgers to return to the Reds when Jurgen Klopp ends his successful spell in charge. Klopp replaced Rodgers in 2015 but the Northern Irishman’s reputation has soared following spells at Celtic and Leicester City.

Rodgers nearly guided Liverpool to their first Premier League title since 1990 but a disappointing end to the 2013-14 campaign saw them pipped by Manchester City.

A poor 12 months in the aftermath of that season saw him replaced by Klopp in October 2015.

The 48-year-old has since had a trophy-laden three years at Celtic before being appointed as Leicester boss in February 2019. Rodgers sensationally won the FA Cup with the Foxes last term.

And former Liverpool defender Carragher, who played under Rodgers for a year at Anfield, believes the door could be open for a return when Klopp eventually leaves.

Klopp finally ended Liverpool’s lengthy wait for a Premier League title in 2020 and guided them to Champions League success the year prior.

“I’m a huge fan of Brendan Rodgers and think he’s a brilliant manager, I really do,” Carragher told Sky Sports about Rodgers, whose Leicester side have suffered a slight dip in form of late.

“I’ve worked with him for 12 months at Liverpool and I think this job came too early for him. if Jurgen Klopp was to leave Liverpool tomorrow Brendan Rodgers would be top of the list.

“That’s not going to happen because he’s been here (Liverpool) before – but done a brilliant job at Leicester.

“It is a bump in the road and I almost feel at Leicester because they’ve fell away at the end it’s almost looked at negatively – ‘Oh the season they threw away the top four’.

“They’re a really good side, a great club in how they recruit but it’s still overachieving what they’ve been doing in the mix of that top four under Brendan Rodgers year in, year out.

“He won’t panic, they’ll come back, but I think it’ll be tough to get into the top four for any club now with the strength of what we see at those top four clubs now.

“It will be tough but they will move up the table.”

Fellow pundit Micah Richards agreed with Carragher but pointed to the incredible job done by Klopp to lift Liverpool to a higher level.

“It’s absolutely staggering. When Klopp came in nobody knew what direction Liverpool were going to go,” the former Manchester City defender added while previewing his old club’s Premier League fixture with Liverpool on Sunday.

“I spoke to Jamie a lot about where did he think they’ll go, not even he could imagine how well they would’ve done.

“They have gone and won the Champions League, gone and won the Premier League – bringing it back after how many years.

“Giving them (the fans) something to shout about, it’s always been a tough place to come and for City to match that is phenomenal. Both sides, incredible.”
