Liverpool star Diogo Jota can be unleashed against Arsenal to get the Reds’ season back on track. The forward, who Jurgen Klopp described as ‘world-class’ midway through last season, is now fully fit following a disrupted pre-season and can reignite his Anfield career.

Jota enjoyed a wonderful start after joining Liverpool from Wolves in the summer of 2020, but injuries and, latterly, the January arrival of Luis Diaz saw him struggle for regular football. The 25-year-old was excellent in a much-improved attacking performance against Rangers on Tuesday night and is surely in line to start against Arsenal on Sunday.

The Portugal star has enjoyed plenty of success against the Gunners in the past. Jota has scored for Liverpool in all four Premier League fixtures against the north Londoners, and has netted in three trips to the Emirates Stadium across all competitions. He has a total of eight goals against Arsenal in his career.

It was after January’s Carabao Cup semi-final victory over Arsenal that Klopp boldly described Jota as a ‘world-class’ talent. He will hope the former Wolves ace can have a similar impact in Sunday’s game.

“We scored two wonderful goals, Diogo Jota was on fire. We were completely convinced when he arrived at the club he would help us massively. Since he is here he has made another step, he has turned into a really world-class striker,” Klopp said after Liverpool’s 2-0 win at the Emirates in January.

“Mentality mixed with quality is the reason we signed him. Of course he scored two goals, he is incredibly important to us, so it is that mix of his skills that is really exciting. He is in good shape as well and long may it continue.”

Liverpool are desperate for a Premier League win against Arsenal and Jota, who has not scored this season but has had bright moments since returning from injury, can help them to it. Klopp’s side have won just two top-flight games this season and have stumbled to too many underwhelming draws. They are already 11 points behind Mikel Arteta’s league leaders.

A front four of Jota, Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah in a slightly different 4-2-3-1 formation dragged Liverpool to victory against Rangers on Tuesday. The quartet all played well, operated fluidly, and showed some of the intensity that has largely been missing from the Merseysiders’ performances this season.

“The way the boys up front moved together was extremely, extremely good, especially for only one session working on it. And that was a low‑intensity session because of their recent workload. We never did it before,” Klopp said after his side beat Rangers.

“I think our setup was the bigger surprise tonight. We surprised ourselves and these situations can then happen. It was difficult to defend. Diogo Jota moved particularly well between the lines.”

The German will hope the same players can make an impact against Arsenal, with ‘world-class’ Jota playing a key role.
