Liverpool have Steven Gerrard plan in place if Jurgen Klopp quits Reds early
Steven Gerrard is set for a sensational return to Liverpool as manager if Jurgen Klopp quits to take the Germany job.
Klopp is the number one choice in his homeland to succeed Joachim Low, having led the Reds to Premier League, Champions League and Club World Cup glory in the past two seasons.
And there are growing fears the 53-year-old could leave Anfield earlier than expected to take charge of his national team.
The manager is contracted to Liverpool until 2024, but German football chiefs could look to replace Low with Klopp before that if Germany under-perform in the Euro 2020 finals.
Low has been Germany boss since 2006, and led them to World Cup glory in 2014.
But the reigning champions crashed out at the group stage in the 2018 tournament – failing to progress beyond the opening round for the first time in 80 years.
Low's current contract takes him through to the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar – but he could be turfed out if Die Mannschaft suffer another disappointing defeat this summer.
And according to a well-placed Liverpool insider, the opportunity to manage Germany would be difficult for Klopp to resist even if it did come sooner than expected.
Knowing this, the Reds' owners FSG have been keeping tabs on Gerrard, who is well on his way to guiding Rangers to a first Scottish title since 2011.
The former Liverpool skipper's success at Rangers is believed to have given FSG confidence that he has the credentials to succeed Klopp.
Gerrard's legendary status at Anfield ensures he would have the respect of players and staff at the club, while he also impressed while coaching Liverpool's academy players after hanging up his boots.
Reds chiefs are confident he would resist offers from other Premier League clubs in favour of taking charge at Liverpool, having spent his entire playing career at the club other than a spell with LA Galaxy.
