Liverpool handed Mason Mount boost as Thomas Tuchel’s verdict emerges

Chelsea's next six Premier League fixtures

Liverpool could be set to emerge as the frontrunners in the race to land Chelsea playmaker Mason Mount, who has also been linked with Bayern Munich following Thomas Tuchel’s recent appointment as their new manager. Mount’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge appears to be somewhat uncertain as things stand, with contract negotiations seemingly at an impasse despite months of internal talks.

Liverpool have been credited with an interest in bringing Mount to Anfield over the last few weeks, while it has also been claimed that new Bayern manager Tuchel is looking to reunite with the 24-year-old in Germany ahead of next season. However, it seems as though a move to Merseyside could be the most likely scenario other than Mount staying at Chelsea, with Bayern not expected to firm up their interest for the foreseeable future.

That’s according to Bild, who are reporting that Mount’s name has not cropped up in discussions between Tuchel and the club’s hierarchy over the last few days. The former Chelsea boss is said to prefer the idea of getting to know his own players first before targeting reinforcements and is already thought to have identified the midfield area as ‘more than adequate’.

It is also said that Bayern will need to trim their squad before welcoming any new arrivals, which could put Liverpool in the driving seat if they decide to pursue Mount when the transfer window reopens later this year. His current deal is set to expire at the end of next season, leaving Chelsea with a dilemma over whether to cash in now or risk losing him on a free transfer in the summer of 2024.

The Blues have reportedly slapped a £50million price tag on Mount, who featured heavily during Tuchel’s reign and was a crucial member of their Champions League-winning side in 2021. It remains to be seen how the situation will eventually play out, with Mount unlikely to be short of options if he does end up leaving Chelsea at some point between now and next summer.

Former England midfielder Danny Murphy recently insisted that Mount will have his pick of Europe’s top clubs if it becomes clear that he will not be staying at Stamford Bridge, telling talkSPORT: “With Mason Mount there are takers, that’s for sure. You are talking about a terrific player.

“I am a big fan of Mason Mount. The criticism this season has been fine because he has had a poor time, as has the team. But he has been at a huge club for four seasons and three of them he has been excellent.

“The fact is he is going to have a choice, because nearly all the big clubs are in for him. They are in for him because they can see what a talent he is, he has just had a little bad spell. From a football perspective I think he gets in Liverpool’s team, Man United’s team and at a push he could get really good game time in Arsenal’s team.”
