Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has insisted his side were dealt a stroke of luck when Cristiano Ronaldo’s strike was ruled out for offside in the second half of their 5-0 win over Manchester United. The Reds were 5-0 up and cruising when Ronaldo’s curling effort found its way past goalkeeper Alisson, only for it to be chalked off for offside following a VAR intervention.
Naby Keita opened the scoring for Liverpool with a coolly-taken strike, before Diogo Jota doubled their lead inside 14 minutes.
Mohamed Salah netted Liverpool’s third in the 39th minute, before scoring again in first-half stoppage time to put the game out of sight for United.
Salah then clinched his hat-trick for Liverpool five minutes after the half-time interval when he latched onto Jordan Henderson’s ball and slotted into the corner of David De Gea’s net.
Speaking after the game, Klopp said Liverpool were helped out by the decision to rule out Ronaldo’s goal, as his side sought to close out the game with a clean sheet.

“The results yes (perfect),” Klopp told BBC Radio 5 Live. “Bruno Fernandes had a chance early on but we were incredibly clinical. We put them under pressure with out high press and it was phenomenal. As the opponent you cannot gain confidence or momentum.
“We know the story of United this season, but 4-0 makes it tricky. 5-0, come on, control it and try to get through it. It was not about humiliating anybody.
“The game was decided then we have to bring it home, when it was pretty much over don’t give them a chance but we did when we let Cristiano Ronaldo score but it was offside so we were lucky.
“We wanted to write our own chapters in the history book and this was another.

“We have the momentum in front of goal. We won games when we were high, when we were young and got carried away but we have Preston on Wednesday.
“This result looks different to the game I score but for the people it is great. My wife was here as well and I hope she enjoyed it too.”
The pressure is mounting on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following his side’s embarrassing display against their rivals.
Liverpool are still unbeaten in the current campaign and have not lost a game on the road since February.
The win means Liverpool move up to second in the Premier League table with 21 points, one behind Chelsea who lead the way with 22.
Meanwhile, Solskjaer’s side are down in seventh with 14 points from their first nine matches.
Next up for Liverpool is Preston in the last-16 of the EFL Cup at Deepdale on Wednesday.
Liverpool will then welcome Brighton to Anfield in the Premier League three days later.
