Liverpool given timely reminder of ideal Fabinho replacement as deals ruled out
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been given a timely boost ahead of the new season with Stefan Bajcetic returning to training after his long injury lay-off with the club reportedly hopeful he can save them millions in trying to replace Fabinho. This summer was always going to be Liverpool’s main target for bolstering their midfield options, particularly with Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all leaving.
Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have arrived early in the window to settle into Klopp’s pre-season plans. But even more signings are expected with both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho set to leave Anfield.
While Henderson’s role would have been expected to reduce this upcoming season, Fabinho’s imminent departure will come as a huge blow. The Brazilian suffered a dip in form last season, but he’s predominantly been a huge part of Liverpool’s midfield unit over the past few years.
He’s also the main option for Liverpool to play as the No 6, sitting in front of the defence to provide more cover. Rumours of his impending departure to Saudi Arabia has elevated talks of Liverpool’s interest in Cheick Doucoure and Romeo Lavia.
However, the Liverpool Echo suggest Bajcetic will be the man trusted to step into Fabinho’s shoes. The Spanish youngster enjoyed a sensational breakthrough last campaign when he was given a chance in the first team by Klopp.
Injuries as well as players being out of form saw Klopp take a chance on Bajcetic, who Mohamed Salah called Liverpool’s “best player” in the few months before the midfielder’s injury. The 18-year-old’s breakthrough campaign ended prematurely in March after picking up an adductor injury in March.

But he’s given Klopp a huge boost with the Premier League season starting in a matter of weeks. The midfielder was pictured on the training pitch on Saturday as part of Liverpool’s training camp in Germany.
It’s the first sign of Bajcetic being ready to ramp up the next phase of his rehabilitation to put him in contention of returning in time for the start of the season.
Liverpool have four more pre-season friendlies booked in before they begin the season away at Chelsea on August 13.
