Liverpool given scare as Robertson forced off with arm in sling on Scotland duty

Liverpool are facing a possible injury lay-off for Andy Robertson after the defender needed to be substituted during Scotland’s Euro 2024 qualifier with Spain on Thursday. The left-back could be seen with his arm in a sling as he trudged off the pitch with a concerned expression on his face, with the Reds and Scotland now facing an anxious wait to discover the extent of his injury.

The 29-year-old appeared to suffer a shoulder injury during Thursday’s game at La Cartuja, Spain’s national stadium, and was seen walking off gingerly while tucking his arm into his shirt to form a makeshift sling.

Robertson came off worse after an aerial collision with Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon as medics rushed onto the pitch to treat him. He was helped by two members of Scotland’s medical team, who ushered him off the pitch as he was withdrawn by manager Steve Clarke and replaced by Everton’s Nathan Patterson before half-time in Seville.

Robertson could be seen wincing as he walked off the field and down the tunnel, and early reports suggest it could be an injury that keeps him sidelined for several weeks – or even months.

The night would soon get worse for Scotland, who would have been baffled to see Scott McTominay’s free-kick ruled out after a VAR review despite there appearing to be nothing wrong with the goal.

Minutes after the break, Spain then took the lead through ex-Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata, leaving Clarke’s men staring down the barrel of their first defeat of the qualifying campaign. Athletic Bilbao’s Olhan Sancet then added a second late on to seal the win and cap a miserable night for the travelling Tartan Army.

In any case, it would be a surprise to see Robertson return to fitness in time for the Merseyside derby against Everton on October 21. And news of Robertson’s worrying injury is unlikely to please Jurgen Klopp, who is likely to lose one of his key players for the busiest period of the season.

Klopp has been consistent in opposing how TV schedules often see Liverpool play in the early kick-off after the international break.

“We have four international breaks by March and for two of them we already have the 12.30 kick-off (immediately afterwards). But we cannot change it. We will never change that, whoever we talk to.

“Now the TV channel has a different name, but obviously it doesn’t change anything at all. They don’t give a… so why should I talk about that? We didn’t think about it.”

The local Merseyside derby will take place at 12.30pm at Anfield, despite his protestations, and the German is facing being left without several stars for the game – with Robertson now added to that list.

The 23/24 home shirt for Liverpool pays homage to the past of the club, as well as collaborator Nike, with a strong 1970s influence. The iconic red, capped with bold white cuffs and collar really does invoke that classic Liverpool FC style while adding a cool retro touch
