Liverpool flop Mignolet hailed for being among ‘world’s best’ after revival

Simon Mignolet has become one of the 'world's best goalkeepers' in a notable Champions League revival at Club Brugge.

The 34-year-old Belgium international has made 22 saves across their four Group B fixtures – and hasn't missed a single minute in keeping four clean sheets which no other team have managed.

Having also won three league titles since leaving Liverpool, his further heroics in their 0-0 draw against Atletico Madrid included a point blank stop using his face – with Liverpool's Alisson shipping six goals already.

Quick to praise their star performer following the draw that saw Brugge become one of only five sides to qualify for the knock-out stages of the competition so far, was general manager Vincent Mannaert.

He said: "We played very solid and you know of course you can count on Simon Mignolet. He is very confident and definitely one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

"His incredible saves were again very important. It is our fourth consecutive clean sheet and we already qualify for the next stage of the Champions League.

"Today you could clearly see we have many qualities in our team, not only on the pitch but also next to it. We also have an incredible mentality. This is a wonderful soccer night for the big Club Brugge family."

Having made 14 saves in that fixture alone, Mignolet has become the only goalkeeper in 19 years to make so many saves in a single game without conceding a goal.

Mignolet kept 80 Premier League clean sheets across his 245 appearances, with 90 of those outings coming for Sunderland before his £9million switch.

Having come so close to the title in his debut season, he was eventually displaced by Loris Karius and later Alisson before returning to Belgium in 2019.

At the time of his departure, Mignolet was heavily critical of Jurgen Klopp's treatment in his final 18 months on Merseyside.

He said: "If I could really fight for my place, I might have stayed. But if I had ended up in goal if Alisson picked up injury, I would be allowed to push 10 shots out of the box.

"Then Alisson could immediately claim his place again. And even if he pushed the ball into his own goal, he would still retain [his place] What sense did it make for me?"
