Liverpool flop having season of his career while Reds’ top four hopes crumble

Forgotten Liverpool flop Fabio Borini is having the season of his career as the Reds' top four hopes crumble in front of them.

The Italian forward failed to impress in three years at Anfield after signing from Roma in the summer of 2012 for £10.5million, with Borini the first signing of Brendan Rodgers' tenure as manager. Borini scored just three goals in 38 appearances for Liverpool before departing for Sunderland in 2015.

Eight years on, the 32-year-old is enjoying an impressive campaign in Turkey for top flight side Fatih Karagumruk as he chips in with goals and assists.

Borini joined Karagumruk in 2021 after spells with AC Milan and Hellas Verona back in his native Italy. Into his third season with the club, Borini has scored 16 goals in 24 appearances across all competitions this term.

His 15 league goals for Andrea Pirlo's side see him ranked second in the Super Lig's scoring charts, meanwhile, he tops the assist standings with nine.

Karagumruk currently find themselves ninth in the table thanks to Borini's goals, despite not having a permanent home or training ground when he first joined the club.

In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Borini explained how he adapted to his new environment, admitting: "It has taught me how to adapt to what you have. Don't moan about what you could have and don't have – which I was doing the first few months.

"You don't have a training ground? Ok, in my free time, twice a week I go to the park to do my extra training… if you need to do recovery, you go to a hotel or a pool. I needed probably more time than I expected to adapt because culturally it's very different. Here it is all a bit loose."

As for playing under World Cup winner and compatriot Pirlo, Borini added: "He brought structure in the way we train and the way we work… in terms of discipline. There is only so much a manager can do, though. Culturally, priorities are different. For us Italians, how you eat and rest is very important, here not so much."

With Borini out of contract in the summer, former club Liverpool could do with his form in front of goal as Jurgen Klopp's side struggle for consistency this season.

The Reds are no longer in either the Champions League or FA Cup and are at risk of missing out on a top four finish in the Premier League.

Saturday's 4-1 loss at Manchester City leaves Liverpool eighth in the Premier League, eight places adrift of the final Champions League qualification place.
