Liverpool fans spot Xabi Alonso’s new deal expires same year as Jurgen Klopp’s
Liverpool fans reckon they've spotted a sign that Xabi Alonso will be their next manager after Jurgen Klopp.
Following an illustrious playing career, in which he won everything there was to win, Alonso hung up his boots back in 2017, having played under an all-star cast of managers.
The ex-Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich star played under Rafael Benitez, Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Pep Guardiola and Vincent del Bosque and has now begun to carve out his own managerial career in Germany following a spell with Real Sociedad's B team.
Back in October 2022, Alonso left San Sebastian to join Bayer Leverkusen, eventually guiding them to the semi-finals of the Europa League, and a sixth placed finish in the Bundesliga. This week it was revealed the Spaniard had signed a new deal with the German side until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Meanwhile, over on Merseyside, last April, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp signed a new deal through till 2026 too. And Reds fans on social media have put two and two together, and reckon the contract expiry dates for Klopp and Alonso are not a coincidence.
One Reds fan tweeted: "Klopp has a contract at Liverpool which ends in June 2026. Xabi Alonso has just extended his current contract at Leverkusen till June 2026. See where I’m going…"

Another replied to Alonso's contract announcement: "Come to Liverpool when Klopp's contract runs down." A third added: "Working towards becoming Klopp's replacement."
A fourth said: "Finishes the same year as Klopp's contract!" with a fifth commenting: "And after that you hopefully take over Liverpool after Klopp."

However, there's no guarantee Klopp will be in any mood to depart Liverpool come the end of the 2025/26 campaign. The Reds have re-tooled well this summer by adding midfielder's Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai to their ranks.
Come 2025, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez likely to be entering their prime, Liverpool are set up nicely for the future, meaning the German could choose to stick around.

Additionally, up until he was sacked by Aston Villa, there had always been a sense that perhaps one day Steven Gerrard could replace Klopp. However, his coaching star has now fallen, with Gerrard having recently moved to Saudi Arabia to coach Al-Ettifaq.
Alonso is of course revered by the Red half of Merseyside, especially after helping Liverpool to claim the 2005 Champions League title. But should his coaching career stall like Gerrard's, it would seem unlikely Liverpool would opt for him to take over from Klopp.
