Liverpool fans spot Joel Matip’s reaction to Fabinho’s clash with Ashley Barnes
On a night of very few positives for Liverpool, Joel Matip managing to complete 90 minutes on his return from injury was a small silver lining.
The Cameroon international had been out since the 1-1 draw with West Brom at the end of December, after he suffered an adductor strain.
With Jordan Henderson adding to the champions' injury woes, Matip was thrown back into the starting XI for the visit of Burnley to Anfield.
Despite his return, the Reds' struggles continued as they were beaten 1-0 by the Clarets, ending their 68-match home unbeaten run in the process.
After a frustrating first half for the hosts, tensions boiled over when the two teams confronted one and other following a collision between Fabinho and Ashley Barnes.
The Burnley forward accused Fabinho of kicking out at him and fell to the turf dramatically. But while some players were struggling to keep their cool, Matip saw the funny side, simulating a dive towards Barnes.
Barnes would ultimately have the last laugh, when he converted an 83rd minute penalty as the Clarets became the first team to win at Anfield since 2017.
On the incident, he said: It was a bit of handbags. He gave us a little kick after, but it was one of them, and you just get on with it."
Following another game without a win, their fifth in a row in the league, Liverpool fans on social media took a little slice of pleasure at Matip's comic reaction.
“There's just something about Matip. He exudes the most chaotic energy,” one fan said in reply.

Another posted: “God i love the man but his injuries,” while a third claimed: “He’s so bizarre but I absolutely adore him.”
“Imagine the fear in the burnley players eyes as he watches those massive arms above him,” a fourth Liverpool fan joked.
“Thank you, I needed that laugh right about now,” a disappointed supporter said.
“Lmao how did I miss this hahahah. Never change Matip. Never change,” another concluded.
