Liverpool fans remind Everton of Rafa Benitez’s savage swipe at new club in 2007
Liverpool fans have mocked Everton after a video resurfaced showing a cheeky Rafael Benitez jibe towards his new club.
A post-match interview after the two sides met in 2007 has circulated on social media in which the new Everton manager belittles his new club during his days as Liverpool boss.
The Spaniard, 61, was announced manager of Everton today after weeks of speculation which saw major backlash by fans, with some even targeting Benitez by placing threatening banners near his home.
And the video in question will not help ease tensions as their new boss clearly and plainly dubs Everton a ‘small club’.
Benitez says in the interview: “Each team decides how they want to win points, you cannot say anything about this. It’s just the situation we faced on the pitch.
“You know when you play with small clubs it’s always difficult, they play deep and they (Everton) tried to do the same.”
Benitez apologised for the comments in 2017 where he clarified that he meant Everton had ‘a small team’, though Everton fans are unlikely to be convinced by the explanation.
Do you think Benitez will receive boos in his first game in charge at Everton? Let us know in the comments section.
The Everton hierarchy had initially tested the waters for former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo but elected to controversially appoint Benitez.
The manager went through a reported four rounds of negotiation talks with Everton’s billionaire owner Farhad Moshiri who ignored all the noise and proceeded to selecting the Spaniard as the next Toffees manager.
It remains to be seen what kind of reception the former Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle United boss receives on his return to Goodison Park this season.
