Liverpool fans love Dean’s unlikely role in Alexander-Arnold goal vs Newcastle

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s spectacular goal in Liverpool’s 3-1 home victory against Newcastle United will live long in the memory.

The England international received the ball thirty yards from goal and proceeded to fire an absolute rocket into the top left-hand corner.

It was the right-back’s second Premier League goal of the season for Jurgen Klopp’s side, and while he is always capable of producing the spectacular, the 23-year-old will do well to score a better strike this season.

And eagle-eyed Liverpool supporters spotted movement so fast and incisive, it likely played a part in Alexander-Arnold’s screamer finding it way into the back of the net.

However, this spell-bounding piece of athleticism was not carried out by a player in a Liverpool or a Newcastle shirt – it was carried out by infamous referee Mike Dean.

The Premier League official is easily the most well-known referee in the Premier League, having amused and frustrated supporters in equal measure with his mid-game antics.

And the experienced official, unintentionally, found himself centre stage when he briefly blocked the line of sight of Alexander-Arnold’s strike.

Before the right-back pulled the trigger, Dean found himself directly in the firing line between Alexander-Arnold, Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, and goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Fortunately, the official is still nimble on his feet, and he managed to quickly get himself out of the way of the shot.

However, Liverpool fans have jokingly praised Dean, claiming his unfortunate positioning had played a huge role in Alexander-Arnold’s goal.

“Can always rely on Mike Dean to be the Star of the F****** Show,” said one Liverpool fan.

“Doing his best beach ball impression,” another fan added, while referencing Darren Bent’s infamous goal against Liverpool in 2009, which struck a beach ball and deflected past Pepe Reina.

“He really doesn’t get enough credit for his off the ball movement,” another Liverpool supporter said, while praising Dean’s footwork.

Liverpool’s victory over Eddie Howe’s side saw them move within one point of current table toppers Manchester City, and three points away from third placed Chelsea, who drew 1-1 with Everton at Stamford Bridge.
