Liverpool fans have Jordan Henderson theory as Gerrard’s replies to Salah query
Liverpool fans have come up with an extravagant theory to explain Steven Gerrard’s signing of Jordan Henderson.
Reds captain Henderson last month made the controversial decision to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq FC. He reportedly signed a bumper £350,000-a-week contract to play under former teammate Gerrard, who was appointed Al-Ettifaq’s manager just weeks before.
The 33-year-old’s move came as a shock to many, though his best years were clearly behind him. Henderson was part of an ageing Liverpool midfield which was repeatedly found wanting last season – and his presence might have blocked the progress of new arrivals Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai in 2023/24.
And now Liverpool fans have taken Gerrard’s comments in an interview to mean Henderson was no longer good enough for the Anfield club.

The manager was questioned in Arabic this week about whether he would consider signing another Liverpool star in Mohamed Salah. But the legendary former Reds captain responded: “No. The answer is no."
Gerrard laughed before adding: "Because Mohamed Salah is my favourite player. I love Liverpool football club so Mohamed can stay where he is.
“When he wins more leagues and more Champions Leagues with Liverpool we’ll maybe consider it.”

His answer appeared to suggest Salah was too important to Liverpool, thereby leading fans on Twitter to suggest Gerrard was doing the opposite – “saving Liverpool” – by signing Henderson.
One Twitter user wrote: “Gerrard saying he wouldn’t want to sign Salah at Ettifaq because he wants him to continue at Liverpool. He actually did buy Hendo to save us after all.”
Another joked: “This guy really took Hendo to save us WOW,” while another tweeted: “Thank you Gerrard I want to say thank you.”
And a fourth added: “This will be his greatest legacy since the 05 CL final. Saved us from a Hendo season or two.”
