Liverpool fans fear Caoimhin Kelleher blunder could cost Reds in transfer market

Caoimhin Kelleher failed to make the most of a rare Premier League start when Liverpool closed their campaign at Southampton on Sunday.

The Republic of Ireland was promoted to No. 1 for the final game of the campaign in a much-changed Reds XI. Jurgen Klopp handed starts to Kelleher, Curtis Jones, Joe Gomez and Kostas Tsimikas, as well as the departing duo of James Milner and Roberto Firmino.

But any hopes of seeing Kelleher join those exiting the club may have been damaged by a first-half performance that saw Liverpool leak two goals. The two teams went in drawing 2-2 at the break, with James Ward-Prowse and Kamaldeen Sulemana converting for the Saints.

And it was Sulemana's first-half strike in particular that had supporters wondering whether Kelleher would nab them quite the kitty they'd been hoping for. The Cork man joined the Reds' academy in 2015 and has been touted as a future star despite struggling for game time given Alisson Becker's reign as No. 1.

Southampton ace Sulemana latched onto Theo Walcott's through ball in the 28th minute and finished low inside Kelleher's near post to level the score at 2-2. Breaking the cardinal sin for goalkeepers at the elite level, more than a few Reds followers suggested the Irishman's price-tag will be 'plummeting' as a result.

"This is doing Kelleher and the club no favours here," wrote a rankled Red. "Losing value with the way he’s conceding."

Others were more specific in their transfer forecasts as one tweeted: "Bro every time Kelleher gets a game this season he brings his value down [by £5million]." Sulemana scored again for Southampton early in the second period before Adam Armstrong added a fourth.

Alisson, 30, doesn't seem likely to lose his place between the posts for Liverpool, and certainly not for Kelleher's gain. The Brazil No. 1's arrival at Anfield has coincided with a new era of success under Klopp, winning two Premier League Golden Gloves and the Yashin Trophy, among other individual awards.

The Reds' reserve stopper is 24 years old and reaching the age where first-team football may take priority over a lesser role in a winning project. Liverpool's defence won't escape blame for their role in Sunday's goal-fest on the south coast, but any chances of banking big on Kelleher's sale may have taken a hit.
