Transfer negotiations are the only aspect of football more unpredictable than the football itself.
Whether it’s the Icelandic ash-cloud preventing Robert Lewandowski’s dream move to Blackburn Rovers, or Willian having a medical at Spurs before proceeding to sign for arch-rivals Chelsea instead, you never really know what’s going to happen.
Unfortunately, Liverpool fans will be cursing their luck in the transfer window once more, as transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claims Donyell Marlen would have likely been posing with a Reds’ shirt, were it not for the club’s inability to shift their fringe players.
The likes of Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri are still stuck firmly at Anfield as another window appears to be drifting past without a transfer in the offing.
Italian journalist Romano said during one of his twitch streams the 22-year-old Dutch star wanted to join Jurgen Klopp’s side, but instead settled for a move to the German manager’s former side Borussia Dortmund who paid PSV Eindhoven £25 million for his services.
Klopp is looking to refresh his side after injuries and poor form ravaged the Reds' Premier League title defence last season.
However, any further potential business depends on how much money the six-time European Champions can raise from sales.
Which players should Liverpool look to sell this summer? Have your say below.
They are currently open to offers for both Shaqiri and Origi, but interest for the Belgian and Swiss stars appears to be few and far between.
The former has been linked with a move to Italian side Lazio, and the 29-year-old has even expressed his interest to the Italian press.
“I told Liverpool board I feel ready for a new challenge," said Shaqiri, who will likely be available for around £10 million this season.
"They accepted my decision and will now consider bids to sell me. Liverpool won’t stop me this summer. I’d love to come back to Italy, and I’d like to play for Lazio."
