Liverpool could face an EFL investigation after boss Jurgen Klopp admitted that the positive Covid test results which led to his side’s Carabao Cup clash with Arsenal being postponed were virtually all false readings. The Reds were due to travel to the Emirates Stadium for their semi-final first leg last Thursday, but will now instead make the trip this week.

On Sunday, Klopp revealed that all but one of the test results had ended up being a false reading.

But the Carabao Cup encounter had already been pushed back a week after Liverpool had insisted they had a ‘rapidly growing number’ of coronavirus cases days before.

According to The Athletic, a number of clubs have complained to the EFL about the situation.

And EFL chiefs could now feel compelled to delve deeper as other clubs have had postponement requests rejected following Covid outbreaks.

“We had last week a proper outbreak and it showed up that we had a lot of false positives but the rules are like they are so all these players who are false positives couldn’t play,” Klopp said at the weekend.

“The only real positive came from Trent Alexander-Arnold and all the rest were false positives.”

The Reds returned to action on Sunday as they thrashed League One side Shrewsbury in the third round of the FA Cup at Anfield.

But Klopp’s side had to come from behind to seal their progression after Daniel Udoh had fired home the opening goal of the game for the visitors.

An understrength Liverpool side rallied, however, and were ahead at the interval as teenage sensation Kaide Gordon levelled before Fabinho struck from the penalty spot.

And they put the game to bed in the latter stages as Roberto Firmino added a third before Fabinho grabbed his second and the Reds’ fourth deep into stoppage time at the end of the match.

Liverpool will be looking to reach the Carabao Cup final for the first time since 2016 when they take on the Gunners over two legs.

On that occasion, they were defeated by Manchester City after a penalty shootout.

Klopp’s team reached the semi-finals a year later, but were dumped out by Southampton after losing both legs.

And the German could name a strong side against the north Londoners on Thursday night after admitting that last week was a difficult one for his players.

“It was a really, really tough week because the boys anyway couldn’t train, because we had to close the training ground,” Klopp added after his side’s FA Cup victory.

“Because until you realise that it’s false positive it takes two extra testing rounds, so it’s really difficult.”
