Liverpool ‘have held talks with representatives of RB Leipzig star Dominik Szoboszlai’, but his £60m release clause ‘expires on Friday’.
The 22-year-old was one of the standout performers in the Bundesliga last season and has also been of interest to Newcastle.
According to the Athletic, the Reds are exploring a deal to sign him this summer, while accepting it will be a difficult move to get across the line.
On June 30 (this Friday), Szoboszlai’s release clause will expire, according to Fabrizio Romano.
So Liverpool must move quickly if they want to avoid risking Leipzig raising the fee for one of their top talents.
Dominik Szoboszlai has emerged as a target for Liverpool as they look to bolster midfield
The Reds must move quickly if they are to secure him before his release clause expires
Szoboszlai is thought to be high on the agenda for Jurgen Klopp’s side along with Kephren Thuram and Romeo Lavia.
Fabio Carvalho is heading to the German side on loan from Liverpool in an unrelated move.
The Hungarian has represented his national side 32 times and scored 10 times for Leipzig last season in 48 matches.
Eddie Howe’s Newcastle are another Premier League side understood to hold an interest in Szoboszlai.
And with Tottenham closing in on a deal for James Maddison, the Magpies may redouble their efforts.
Newcastle have already seemingly secured Sandro Tonali for £55m from AC Milan and adding Szoboszlai would be a real statement of intent.
Liverpool intentions to bolster their midfield are well known and they have already recruited Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton for £35m.
Szoboszlai helped RB Leipzig win the German Cup last season and was a key performer
Thuram, currently in action for France under-21s at the European Championships is highly regarded by the Anfield club, though it remains to be seen whether Nice will be willing to sell.
Lavia, meanwhile, is of interest to a number of top Premier League sides including Arsenal and Chelsea.
But with the Gunners intending to spend upwards of £100m on Declan Rice, it could reduce their chances of another significant outlay on a central midfielder.
