Liverpool dealt blow as Andy Robertson provides injury update

Andy Robertson will miss the start of Liverpool’s Premier League campaign after confirming he suffered ankle ligament damage during the pre-season friendly against Athletic Bilbao.

The Scotland defender hobbled off shortly before half-time at Anfield after blocking a cross and rolling his ankle in the process.

Providing an update on the injury on social media, Robertson said: ‘Thanks to everyone for the kind messages and support. Scan suggests nothing too major but there’s some ligament damage which will need to mend.

‘I will be grafting every day so I can help the team again sooner rather than later. Good luck to the boys playing tonight #YNWA.’

Robertson left Anfield on Sunday on crutches with his right foot in a protective boot. He underwent a scan at Liverpool’s Spire Hospital on Monday morning where the ligament damage was revealed.

The 27-year-old is now expected to be sidelined for all of August, with Liverpool starting their 2021-22 Premier League campaign this Saturday against Norwich City.

Robertson has been a mainstay in Liverpool’s side since his move from Hull City in 2018, helping the club win the Champions League in 2019 and Premier League in 2020.

The left-back started all 38 of Liverpool’s league matches last season as Klopp’s side recovered from a difficult period to finish fourth.

In better news for the Reds, Virgil van Dijk – who missed most of last season through injury – got more minutes into the legs during the pre-season run-out against Spanish side Bilbao.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, who missed this summer’s Euros after suffering an injury, also featured against Bilbao and says he is ‘fit and ready’ for the new season.

He said: ‘I think it’s perfect timing the way the games have gone in pre-season, just building up to this: started at 30 [minutes], then 45, a couple of 60s under the belt and then today obviously getting 90.

‘I think we’ve timed it well and it gives us a good couple of days to recover and then go on to Norwich next week.’

Asked whether he feels 100 per cent fit, Alexander-Arnold added: ‘Yeah, definitely. I’ve started pre-season quite well.

‘In training I’ve been putting the work in, got the all-clear from the medical staff early doors in pre-season and have been able to push on, get fit and get the full 90 under my belt today.’
