Liverpool could still make more moves in the transfer market after beating Manchester United to the signing of Cody Gakpo. The Reds have agreed a fee that could rise to as much as £44million to secure the Dutchman’s services after months of speculation had suggested he would be making the move to Old Trafford instead.

Gakpo may not be Jurgen Klopp’s final addition of the January transfer window, with the club still requiring further reinforcements to get their campaign back on track. Here, Express Sport details some of the names who could be on the horizon with midfield an area where the club particularly need to improve.

Jude Bellingham

Liverpool’s interest in Bellingham has been one of the longest-running sagas in the transfer market and the teenager appears closer than ever to making the move to Anfield. The Borussia Dortmund star struck up something of a bromance with Jordan Henderson over the course of the World Cup, with the Reds skipper stressing the benefits of playing for the club.

Gakpo’s arrival should have no impact on the potential to sign the 19-year-old however, with a price tag that is likely to be in excess of £100m it may have to be a deal that must wait until next summer. Dortmund are reluctant to part with their star asset halfway through the season but are likely to be more amenable come the end of the season when it is easier to source a replacement.

Enzo Fernandez

The Argentine’s performances at the World Cup have captured the attention of a host of clubs, with Liverpool believed to be among that number. The 21-year-old offers creativity from the holding midfield role and could go on to become the club’s first choice in the position for the next decade.

However, Klopp may face the same hurdles to attract Fernandez to Anfield in January that he does with Bellingham. Benfica have confirmed they have no intention to sell their top stars over the winter, meaning the Reds would need to fork out £106m for his release clause.

There is also no certainty that the midfielder would agree to the move at this time, insisting his full focus currently remains with the Portuguese side which means this is another that may have to wait til summer.

Eljif Elmas

Reports have linked the Napoli star with a move to Liverpool in recent days, with Ahmet Ercanlar stating Klopp had held a private call with the player encouraging him to come to Anfield. He may be the most achievable option for the club after being used sparingly by the Italian side this season, seeing just over 500 minutes of match action in 14 appearances in the Serie A.

The North Macedonian may be the best option for the Reds at the current moment in time before chasing Bellingham and Fernandez over the summer. It remains to be seen whether or not Klopp decides to take any concrete action other than his reported phone call.
