Liverpool could launch a move for Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham as early as January as the German club are reportedly interested in signing Reds ace Naby Keita. The Merseyside giants could attempt to thrash out a swap deal that would see the two midfielders moving in opposite directions.

Liverpool are long-term admirers of Bellingham, who joined Dortmund from Birmingham in 2020 for £30million. Bellingham, who was a regular starter for the Blues in the Championship at the age of 16, has become one of the best young players in European football during his time at Signal Iduna Park and is attracting interest from a whole host of top clubs. And if Dortmund are that keen to sign Keita, they could be willing to agree a part-exchange deal to allow Bellingham to move to Anfield.

According to German publication Bild, the Bundesliga giants are hot for Keita and are watching his contract situation closely. The 27-year-old Guinea international, who moved to Merseyside from RB Leipzig in 2018, is out of contract next June and could be set to quit Liverpool after failing to hold down a regular starting place for much of his Reds career.

Dortmund are preparing to make a move for Keita and want to sign the player for free when his current deal expires. But they face a huge battle to keep Bellingham next summer anyway so might decide to allow the England international to depart the club mid-season if it means they can firm up his replacement at the same time. And that would be welcomed news for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Liverpool have struggled for form during the early part of the season due to a midfield injury crisis. The Reds are short of world-class options in that position anyway and are desperate to bring in fresh talent as they attempt to keep pace with the best teams in the Premier League and the Champions League. And Bellingham, who is yet to miss a second of action for Dortmund this season, would light up the Premier League.

Bellingham still has three years remaining on his deal in Germany, But on Saturday, The Sun reported that Dortmund would be willing to allow the teenage sensation to depart for £83m if the transfer fee was paid in one hit. And that development will have Europe’s powerhouse clubs licking their lips.

Manchester City are convinced they will win the battle to sign the ace, with Pep Guardiola believing the player has what it takes to fill Kevin de Bruyne’s boots. The Citizens signed Bellingham’s pal Erling Haaland from Dortmund this summer and have a good relationship with the Bundesliga team.

Meanwhile, Manchester United and Chelsea are also keen to sign the superstar. So if Liverpool want to put themselves in the driving seat to secure a deal, they may have to push Keita Dortmund’s way as quickly as they can.
