Liverpool Football Club have called on their supporters to refrain from using the "offensive and inappropriate" chant sung by a number of their fans at Carrow Road on Saturday.

While Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah rounded off a fine opening day victory for the 2019/20 champions, the club were forced to address one particular song.

The result was overshadowed by the actions of some of those in attendance against newly-promoted Norwich, taking the shine off their comprehensive victory.

The chant was aimed at Chelsea loanee Billy Gilmour, and comes after Kick It Out called for more to be done about offensive chanting aimed at the west London side as well as others.

With @LFC_LGBT writing on Twitter: "Great result today marred by homophobic chanting by some of our fans targeting Chelsea loanee Billy Gilmour.

"If you can't support without resorting to bigoted nonsense, you don't understand YNWA."

The club tweeted in response: "The chant is offensive and inappropriate – a message we have repeatedly communicated alongside Kop Outs.

"We urge supporters to remember the inclusive values of the club and to refrain from using it in the future."

Kick It Out wrote in 2019: "Following a number of reports about homophobic chanting by Liverpool supporters towards Chelsea fans on Sunday, we welcome the statements made by both clubs condemning the behaviour.

"The **** *** chants have been directed at Chelsea for years, with little action taken by The FA or Police — and that must not continue. We are absolutely clear: the chant is homophobic and must be treated as such.

"We expect stronger condemnation and appropriate sanctions, just as we would for any other form of discriminatory chanting."
