Jurgen Klopp faces further punishment for his behaviour on the touchlines during Liverpool’s win over Manchester City on Sunday. The Premier League clash proved to be a fiery encounter on and off the pitch as tackles were flying in and both managers were unhappy at certain stages.

Guardiola was left furious when Phil Foden’s goal was disallowed for Erling Haaland’s foul on Fabinho earlier in the build-up. The City manager escaped any punishment, but he did get a reaction from the Liverpool fans when he appeared to taunt the home crowd.

However, Klopp overstepped the mark when he exploded at the linesman 10 minutes after Mohamed Salah’s goal. The Egypt international was in a tussle with Bernardo Silva heading towards the corner when the City star grabbed a huge chunk of his rival’s shirt before both tumbled to the floor.

Referee Anthony Taylor opted against blowing his whistle while the linesman in front of the incident didn’t see anything wrong much to the dismay of Salah and the Liverpool crowd. But it was Klopp who couldn’t hold back his anger as he let rip at the assistant referee as the official came up to Liverpool’s technical area.

Seconds later and Taylor walked over and brandished a straight red card to Klopp, who scurried down the tunnel to watch the rest of the match from a screen. Klopp did return at full-time and shook the hands of the officials as they made their way down the tunnel at the end.

And the Liverpool boss admitted after the game that he was “not proud” of his actions. He now faces the prospect of being banned for at least one game after receiving a straight red card.

Both Jesse Marsch and Thomas Tuchel have received one-match touchline bans already this season for outbursts in their own rights. Klopp is likely to be guilty of being in breach of FA Rule E3, which states: “A participant shall at all times act in the best interests of the game and shall not act in any manner which is improper or brings the game into disrepute or use any one, or a combination of, violent conduct, serious foul play, threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour.”

The Liverpool boss will also likely be handed a five-figure fine based on previous punishments for Premier League managers who have been sent off. It means Klopp may well be banned from the dugout for Liverpool’s next Premier League match against West Ham on Wednesday.

Alan Pardew was handed the longest managerial ban in Premier League history back in 2014 when he headbutted Hull City midfielder David Meyler. The then-Newcastle boss received a seven-match ban by the FA and was fined £60,000.
