Liverpool have been in sensational form this season and have showcased their attacking impetus by racking up 15 goals in their first six Premier League games. The Reds moved to the top of the table last weekend, despite dropping points at Brentford.

Jurgen Klopp has once again been able to rely on his leading man Mohamed Salah, who has notched five times in the top-flight to add to his three Champions League goals this term.

Liverpool appear to have returned to the form which saw them lift the European trophy in 2019 before storming to the Premier League title a year later.

But Klopp has now been warned that his side will face a nightmare scenario if they were to lose Salah to injury.

That stark warning has been sent by former England striker Chris Sutton, who believes Liverpool don’t have the strength in depth to cope if Salah is forced to undertake a spell on the sidelines.

“If Liverpool were to lose Mohamed Salah for a month or two, they would suffer,” Sutton wrote in The Daily Mail.

“If Manchester City lose Jack Grealish, they’ve got Phil Foden. If they lose Raheem Sterling, they’ve got Riyad Mahrez.

“If they lose Kevin De Bruyne, they’ve got Bernardo Silva, not to mention Gabriel Jesus popping up wherever Pep Guardiola tells him to go. Oh, and Ferran Torres.

“City didn’t sign a striker in the summer and yet they’re so well equipped to become the champions again, it’s frightening.

“I was asked to analyse the Liverpool and City attacks and decide which one is best.

“If I had to name the best attacker from either side, that’s Salah.

“In him, Liverpool have the finest individual forward. But City have the best attack overall.

“It seems strange voting for the side without a designated centre forward but Guardiola has such a special group.

“He’s got an exceptional depth of talent which should enable him to fight on all fronts.

“Already we’ve seen how he can turn to different attackers for different games. Foden and Jesus started against Chelsea, Sterling and Mahrez started against PSG.

“Such rotation is great for City. Liverpool don’t have that luxury. They’ve got a set front three in Salah, Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane, then Roberto Firmino as a spare.

“Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi are handy players but they’re not at the same level.”

Liverpool already face the prospect of losing Salah this season, as the forward will be linking-up with Egypt in January when the African Cup of Nations gets underway.

By then, Klopp will have a better indication of how Liverpool’s season is likely to pan out and whether his side can expect to be battling for domestic and European honours come the end of the campaign.

And their immediate task is to lay down a gauntlet later today when Guardiola takes the champions to Anfield.

Since losing to Tottenham on the opening game of the campaign, City have remained unbeaten and reiterated their title credentials by defeating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

It’s sure to be a cracker on Merseyside.
