Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp told of ‘massive transfer mistake’ Szoboszlai deal

Former Liverpool left-back Jose Enrique thinks Jurgen Klopp may have made a mistake in letting Roberto Firmino depart the club on a free transfer. The Brazilian forward departs Merseyside as an Anfield icon and has since signed for Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli ahead of a new chapter in the Middle East.

Despite the signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, Enrique can’t help but feel Liverpool should have kept hold of Firmino as it could come back to haunt them.

The Spaniard said on Instagram: “I actually believe this is a massive mistake from Liverpool letting him go because if he is still fit he is better than [Cody] Gakpo, Darwin [Nunez] so… but all the best, a big legend for the Reds!”

Liverpool had offered Firmino the chance to extend his stay but the 31-year-old decided he wants to try a new challenge.

Real Madrid had shown interest following Karim Benzema’s move to Al Ittihad but now Firmino will join the Frenchman in the Middle East.

Despite the emotional goodbye, Klopp hopes Liverpool have enough to fill the void of Firmino and there is optimism Nunez could really take off following his challenging debut season in the Premier League.

Liverpool will also be keen to call upon the quality and class of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, who both missed lengthy periods of the 2022/23 season through injury.

Firmino could yet be joined by former Liverpool team-mate Sadio Mane at Al Ahli.

The Saudi side, who won the second division last season, are now trying to sign Mane from Bayern Munich.

Man Utd submit opening bid to Fenerbahce as Ten Hag’s transfer plans take twist[GOSSIP]

They are set to offer the Senegal international a three-year contract in a bid to try and persuade him to leave Europe.

Mane is deemed available for transfer this summer following his tough debut season in Germany with Bayern.

He was involved in a public spat with team-mate Leroy Sane after the Champions League defeat to Manchester City and he allegedly split his colleague’s lip during the dustup.

Since then, Mane’s time at Bayern has soured and the club are ready to entertain any proposals that arrive.

Meanwhile, Mane wants to prove his worth and showcase exactly why he was brought to Munich despite helping Bayern win the title on the final day of the season following a pulsating climax to the campaign.

Liverpool have zero interest in bringing Mane back to the club and if he was to join Al Ahli, he would also team up with compatriot Edouard Mendy.

The Senegal international goalkeeper recently joined the Middle East outfit from Chelsea in a £16m deal.
