Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp takes swipe at Man Utd icons Gary and Phil Neville
Jurgen Klopp has joked that “nobody was interested” in the Neville brothers while speaking about the Mac Allister siblings facing off against each other on Thursday night. Alexis Mac Allister and Kevin Mac Allister faced off the the first time in their professional careers on Thursday when Liverpool went up against Union Saint-Gilloise.
Most of the pre-match and post-match talk was dominated by the story of the two Argentine stars going up against each other in a sweet moment for their family. Klopp joked in his press conference on Friday looking ahead to this weekend’s match against Brighton that the Union Saint-Gilloise midfielder may not be able to return back to Belgium as “they are giving 25 interviews in a row now together”.
“It’s the first time that two brothers played against each other in world football or whatever it felt like, it’s a really nice story.” The Liverpool boss was soon reminded of one famous set of brothers from Manchester United.
Gary Neville hit back at Klopp this week for his comments calling for a replay against Tottenham after the VAR mistake for Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal. And Klopp appeared to take aim at the United icon, replying: “Well nobody was interested in that obviously. Sorry, that was a penalty I had to take that.”
The German raised some eyebrows earlier this week when he called for the Premier League match against Tottenham to be replayed. “Something like this never happened, so that is why I think a replay is the right thing to do,” he said.
Mutliple reports have claimed there is no real prospect of a replay, but Klopp’s comments have caused a stir. Neville was far from impressed by Klopp’s request for the match to be replayed, calling it “madness”.

“Can’t believe how Liverpool have grabbed defeat from victory in their handling of this!” he wrote on social media. “They were wronged by a shocking mistake. End of!
“Now we’ve seen they want a replay! That’s madness.” Diaz’s disallowed goal wasn’t the only decision to frustrate Klopp as he also felt Curtis Jones was wrongfully sent off.
A Premier League panel also felt Diogo Jota was unlucky to be shown a second yellow card in the game, which left Liverpool down to nine men in the final 15 minutes of the game.
