Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp claims there are positives to take following Saturday’s Merseyside derby defeat to Everton at Anfield. Everton beat Liverpool 2-0 to win at the home of their rivals in a Premier League match for the first time since 1999. Goals from Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson condemned Klopp’s side to a fourth straight home loss in the top flight.

Richarlison gave Everton the lead in just the third minute, a goal Klopp believes should have been avoided.

“It is [tough to take] but we conceded this early goal which was completely unnecessary and have to defend it better,” the German told BBC Sport.

“We had to chase the game and did it well creative wise, we created some in the first half and even more in the second half but we did not finish our situations off.

“We made one mistake in the first half and they used it.”

Klopp says there were positives but will use that as a “lifeline” from tomorrow, refusing to dwell on them moments after a defeat.

He continued: “I don’t like to talk today about the good stuff because we lose the game and we feel that deeply, I have to use it tomorrow and it is our lifeline to keep going.

“We have to improve on the finishing stuff and then we will win football games.

“Decisive margins, to score a goal you have to create a situation and finish it off.

“There is no alternative but to keep going. You concede which is not cool, lose Jordan Henderson which is not cool and I feel the boys dealt with it quite well, could they deal with it better? Maybe. We will keep going.”

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti was understandably buoyant following the result.

The Italian dedicated the victory to the club’s supporters, whose long wait for a win at Anfield came to an end.

“We are really happy, really pleased. After a long time Everton are able to win at Anfield, it is a good gift for our supporters,” Ancelotti said.

“The performance was good, we were focussed, worked hard and when we had the opportunities we were clinical.

“We have three points, the derby is a special game as we said before but we have to catch three points at home too. It is not good enough at home.”
