Liverpool have repeated last summer’s transfer tactic, with youngster Leighton Clarkson joining Blackburn Rovers on a season-long loan. Reds youngster Harvey Elliott trod the same path last campaign, returning to Anfield as a much more experienced player and graduating to the first team.

Still in his teens, Clarkson is well-regarded by Liverpool and has already made three senior appearances.

Most of his experience to date, however, has been in Premier League 2, where he managed three goals and three assists last campaign.

According to Goal, Clarkson’s loan signing was in the pipeline for a number of days, before being announced on Monday.

The move makes sense on many levels, with the youngster a boyhood Rovers fan having grown up in that neck of the woods.

Furthermore, the clubs have a recent history of conducting business, with Elliott’s temporary spell at Ewood Park proving beneficial for all parties.

Tony Mowbray is thought to be a keen admirer of Clarkson, with the Lancashire side sending people to watch him during Liverpool’s pre-season matches.

The youngster featured multiple times in the lead-up to the new campaign, and is supposedly keen for an extended run in senior football over the coming year.

Elliott was a total success for Rovers last season, notching seven goals and 11 assists in 41 appearances as they cruised to a mid-table finish.

In fact, his loan spell was such a triumph that Jurgen Klopp has opted to keep him in and around the first-team this season at just 18-years-old.

With the tricky youngster used experimentally in midfield by the German in pre-season, he could see significant game time as the club have so far chosen not to replace Gini Wijnaldum since his move to PSG.

Elliott’s name was thrust onto the scene when he became the youngest senior player in EFL Cup history, turning out for Fulham when he was just 15.

Undoubtedly, Liverpool will hope that Clarkson’s venture into the Championship can turn out to be a similar success story, although Elliott still has some way to go.

The Reds got off to a comfortable start to their Premier League season on Saturday, brushing Norwich aside at Carrow Road with Elliott coming on as a second-half substitute.

Klopp’s side are expected to be rejuvenated, given their prime centre-back options are now back to full fitness, including Virgil van Dijk.

As for Clarkson, he could feature against Nottingham Forest in Rovers’ mid-week fixture.
