Liverpool may be about to lose out on signing Barcelona midfielder Gavi as he could reportedly sign a new contract this week. Gavi’s current deal expires at the end of this season and Liverpool have been linked with his signature.

The Barcelona ace only turned 18 last month but has already made over 50 first-team appearances. Gavi has also won 10 caps for Spain, so his contract situation has alerted clubs across Europe.

Liverpool were in the market for a midfielder in the summer and brought in Arthur Melo on loan on the final day of the window. But the Reds will still be on the lookout for longer-term options in the middle of the park.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo report Liverpool’s interest in the player. Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also keeping an eye on his situation.

However, the report says Gavi is set to put pen to paper on a new contract until 2026. Barca want the deal signed before October.

But with Gavi set to go on international duty with Spain next week, the contract could be signed in the coming days. The teenager has started all five La Liga matches so far this season, with Barca sitting second in the table with four wins and a draw to their name.

Former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell recently outlined how good a signing Gavi would be for Liverpool. Campbell told Football Insider: “Gavi is a really good young player.

“He is technically gifted and knows where the back of the net is. If he comes onto the market, there will be quite a few clubs coveting him.

“He is a brilliant player and is one who would definitely improve that Liverpool team. He could be at the club for five to ten years as well.

“I would expect Liverpool to be knocking on the door if he was to become available.” But it appears Gavi will not be an option for Liverpool, or any other club, in the near future.

Borussia Dortmund and England star Jude Bellingham is expected to be a target for Liverpool next summer. The Reds have struggled this season, with midfield in particular an area of concern.

Thiago Alcantara is now back from injury but skipper Jordan Henderson is not expected back this side of the international break. Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are also both absent with injuries.
