Liverpool are assessing potential back-up goalkeeper options despite offering Adrian a contract extension.

The 34-year-old Spaniard has interest from Real Betis among others where he would hope to become first choice and has still to commit himself to another year at Anfield.

Adrian lost his place as Alisson Becker’s deputy when Jurgen Klopp handed 22-year-old Caoimhin Kelleher a run of games in December. However, Adrian kept a clean sheet when he was recalled for the Premier League win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in February.

Liverpool are prepared to let Kelleher go out on loan next season recognising that the 22-year-old needs a run of regular games to kick on. That would leave them looking for experienced cover for Alisson should Adrian opt to move on.

Aston Villa keeper Tom Heaton, 35, who is out of contract this summer, is understood to be one keeper who was offered to Liverpool but he is now close to agreeing terms with former club Manchester United.

Liverpool would prefer a free agent as they continue to be mindful over finances. A deal is expected to be completed for £40million Red Bull Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate but Klopp underlined last week that other new arrivals for this summer will hinge on what players leave.

Goalkeeper Loris Karius, on loan at Union Berlin, is wanted by Stuttgart. The 27-year-old is under contract at Liverpool until 2022.
