Liverpool are weighing up a summer move for Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes.

Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham is still their primary target but Nunes is under consideration as an alternative option given Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid are vying over the England international’s signature.

The midfield has been the one problem area for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool of late and Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham (above) is still their number one transfer target

Bellingham is widely expected to leave Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in the summer and Liverpool are one of the club interested in his services.

Birmingham-born Bellingham saw his stock rise following the 2022 World Cup as he produced a string of stellar performances in Qatar.

The 19-year-old was regarded as one of the best midfielders in the tournament and started every game under Gareth Southgate.

Therefore, several clubs are vying for his signature – making competition particularly high

Back in Europe, the youthful box-to-box midfielder has scored nine goals in all competitions for Dortmund so far this season.

Therefore, the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid have all registered an interest in signings him.

The competition to sign Bellingham is increasing. Therefore, Liverpool have began to assess alternative options.

One of those options is Nunes. The 24-year-old has caught Jurgen Klopp’s attention, despite only just arriving in the Premier League from Sporting Lisbon in the summer.

The 24-year-old joined Wolves from Sporting in a £38million move in August and was labelled as one of the best in the world by Pep Guardiola.

In 50 games for Sporting last season, Nunes notch four goals and five assists, helping his side to a Portuguese Super Cup and League Cup double.

However, Nunes hasn’t been impressed with his form since arriving in England. He said: ‘I put more pressure on myself because I want to be the best, but I don’t think I did enough. I have the hunger now to get to where I want to be.

‘I want to be better than I was in the last six months, and I think these first six months of 2023 are going to be better individually for me. I have that in my mind and I’m pretty sure that I’m going to show that.’

However, his form has not deterred Liverpool. They view Nunes as a good long-term solution to their midfield problem.

Liverpool are also open to signing a midfielder on loan this month if the right player becomes available amid their issues in that area of the pitch.

Klopp is eager to reinforce his midfield line given his side has been left short on numerous occasions due to injuries.

Additionally, there are several stars in Klopp’s squad that are 30 or over. Some are also coming to the end of their contracts.

Therefore, Liverpool would be open to signing a midfielder on loan during the January transfer market.

Bellingham will remain as Liverpool’s long-term focus when it comes to their budget, but they are exploring other cheap options this month that won’t cut across his arrival.
