Liverpool are branded a 'sieve' by Spanish outlet Marca

Liverpool are branded a ‘sieve’ by Spanish outlet Marca after shocking hole ridden defensive display in 3-0 Wolves loss with focus turning towards the struggling Reds’ Champions League last-16 clash with Real Madrid

  • Liverpool are languishing down in 10th in the Premier League table after defeat
  • Poor run of form leaves them on back foot heading into the Champions League
  • Liverpool will take on Spanish giants Real Madrid later this month in the last-16

Liverpool’s recent poor form has seen them mocked by Spanish media, with outlet Marca calling Jurgen Klopp’s men a ‘sieve’.

A terrible season for the Reds hit another low point on Saturday after they were easily swatted aside 3-0 by a Wolves team who had only scored a top-flight low of 12 goals this season ahead of the Molineux meeting.

Klopp’s Liverpool are yet to win a Premier League game in 2023, having also lost 3-1 at Brentford and 3-0 at Brighton, while also being held to a goalless draw by Chelsea at Anfield.

During that time they edged past Wolves after a replay in the FA Cup, but were knocked out in the fourth round following another defeat by Brighton, 2-1, at the end of January.

Pressure is now piling on the Reds who return to action in the Champions League later this month when they face Real Madrid in the last-16.

Jurgen Klopp has been unable to explain the Reds’ collapse in form and confidence this term

Marca have been keen to focus on the defensive lapses of Klopp’s team this term, effectively saying the Reds had as many holes as a sieve, before reporting the damning stats of a team many pundits and supporters considered as title challengers at the start of the season.

Their report focuses on how Klopp’s Liverpool are a ‘calamity’ this year while also scoring one goal during a spell where they have conceded nine.

It also points out how, having now conceded 28 goals, Klopp’s defence has been breached more times than the entirety of last season (26).

At Molineux, Joel Matip scored an own goal after just five minutes, while Craig Dawson doubled the lead just seven minutes later to leave the Reds stunned.

Wolves then added their third with 19 minutes to play through Ruben Neves.

Klopp was left seething at his side’s feeble display in the Midlands, having been unable to explain his side’s slow start.

‘I have no explanation for you, I’m sorry. It needs to change,’ he said.

‘These first 15 minutes cannot be allowed. It needs to change. I have no explanation. There is no excuse for it.

‘We caused the misery with the first 12 minutes. It cannot happen but it did. That is really tough to swallow.

Liverpool will be back in Champions League action later in February against Real Madrid

‘You’re 2-0 down, the crowd is there but it opens up and we get some control. Then for about 45 minutes we play a good away game without scoring. That sums it up pretty much.

‘It needs to change. That’s the thing. I stand here again and for the first 15 minutes I have no explanation, I’m sorry.

‘In the end we lost 3-0 because the goal in the second half was perhaps the first time they crossed the halfway line. But it’s right because when you start like this you don’t deserve anything in a Premier League game.’
