Liverpool and Manchester United have suffered a transfer blow after Bayern Munich reportedly made progress in tying Jamal Musiala down to a new contract.

Sportsmail exclusively revealed last month that the Bundesliga and European champions had opened talks with the 17-year-old about a new deal worth in excess of £100,000-per-week.

The England U21 international has just 18 months left on his youth agreement but Sportsmail revealed Munich are understood to have earmarked Musiala for a deal with a weekly, six-figure basic salary with further performance-related bonuses on top.

Now, according to Goal, the negotiations between the two parties have advanced in the German side’s bid to secure his long-term future amid mounting Premier League interest in the record-breaking teenager.

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool are reportedly big admirers of Musiala, while Manchester United and Manchester City are also among the clubs keeping an eye on the talks.

Bayern prised Musiala away from Chelsea after eight years in their academy last July for a small fee, but now face the challenge of avoiding losing one of Europe’s best young attackers for a fraction of his true value.

Musiala became Bayern’s youngest ever player in June when he made his Bundesliga debut against Freiburg, before becoming their youngest ever scorer against Schalke on the opening day of this season in September.

Bayern head coach Hansi Flick recently talked up the talents of Musiala, who has scored three goals in 21 appearances across all competitions for Flick’s side this term.

‘Jamal has enormous qualities,’ Flick said. ‘Bayern are clearly interested in retaining this player for a longer period of time.’

Musiala has also played twice for England U21s, scoring on his first start in the 5-0 win against Albania in November.

He was born in Germany but moved to England at a young age and represented both countries at youth level, but the Three Lions acted quicker and senior boss Gareth Southgate has also had informal talks with Musiala confirming he is on the radar for senior honours.
