Liverpool forward Xherdan Shaqiri is joining Lyon in a £9.5million deal.

The 29-year old Swiss international has been given permission to travel to France to complete his move after protracted negotiations between the clubs.

Lyon had initially offered £4m which was dismissed as ‘ridiculous’ by Liverpool, before coming back with a revised offer. Shaqiri has agreed a four year contract.

The Switzerland star had informed manager Jurgen Klopp of his wish to leave the club

The winger joined Jurgen Klopp’s side from Stoke City in 2018 after his £13.5million release clause was triggered but he has since fallen down the pecking order on Merseyside.

Shaqiri had informed Klopp of his desire to leave the club earlier this summer in search of first team football, which has now been granted by sporting director Michael Edwards.

The 29-year-old has featured 63 times for Liverpool in the last three seasons scoring eight times, but his game time reduced heavily last term.

Shaqiri only completed 90 minutes once in 14 Premier League appearances, in a 1-0 shock home defeat by Fulham, and he ended the campaign more often than not as an unused substitute on the bench.

However, his time at Anfield did result in him picking up winners medals in the Premier League and Champions League having proved to be a handy asset early on to Klopp’s outfit.

Klopp is unlikely to dip into the transfer market to replace Shaqiri, with Harvey Elliot set to be trusted to fill the void having impressed on loan at Blackburn Rovers in the Championship last term.

The Reds are also looking to hand game time to the likes of 16-year-old Kaide Gordon in domestic cup competitions this term.
