Liverpool have reportedly made a breakthrough in their attempts to sign Portuguese-born youngster Fabio Carvalho from Fulham. While a fee and personal terms have supposedly been agreed already, completing the formalities between now and the deadline could prove tricky.

Liverpool stayed true to recent transfer habits by pondering through an inactive opening few weeks of the January window.

But they soon sprung into life to nab Colombian winger Luis Diaz from Tottenham’s toes in a deal which includes an initial fee of £34million.

With Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah still flying high on either flank under Jurgen Klopp, the Reds were not necessarily expected to go so big on such a crowd-pleasing player this month.

But they may not be done there, and could round off the month with another impressive signing if Carvalho also heads to Anfield.

According to Sky Sports News, the negotiations were conducted in a friendly atmosphere due to the success of Harry Wilson’s summer switch from Merseyside to west London.

And The Times claim that the two sides came to an agreement around an hour before the deadline, but could face a demanding rush to get the deal over the line before 11pm.

Express Sport understands that Carvalho will head back to Craven Cottage to see out the season, and Neco Williams will head in the opposite direction in a separate move.

The total fee has been reported at around £8m, and the youngster has already agreed on a five-year contract.

Carvalho would arrive as an exciting signing for Liverpool fans, given that he has assisted four and scored seven in just 18 Championship games so far this term.

With a loan arrangement in place to continue his hot streak at Craven Cottage, he will have the chance to continue his momentum as the Cottagers lead the way in the Championsip’s race for promotion.

When summer rolls around, he would then join up with a talented squad, and a promising young contingent including Kaide Gordon and Harvey Elliott.

But everything hinges on the deal reaching completion in time, with a medical the last remaining hurdle.

After beginning the window slowly, Liverpool could finish it off with one of the final moves of any Premier League side as the 20 participants prepare to knuckle down for the remainder of the campaign.

The Reds are currently Manchester City’s nearest challengers, and can work their way back to a six-point deficit if they win their game in hand.

Salah and Mane are also due to return from AFCON in due course, which should buoy Klopp’s side as they attempt to keep the pressure on over the next few months.
