Liverpool ace reacts to title rivals Chelsea scoring last-minute winner vs Leeds

Trent Alexander-Arnold insists Liverpool ‘can’t complain’ about Chelsea scoring a last-minute winner to beat Leeds United and says it is ‘exciting’ to be involved in a thrilling Premier League title race.

Thomas Tuchel’s European champions lost to West Ham last weekend and appeared set to drop more points at home to Leeds on Saturday.

The visitors took the lead through Raphinha and levelled the match at 2-2 with around ten minutes remaining after Mason Mount and Jorginho both scored for the Blues.

But Antonio Rudiger won his second penalty of the match in the dying seconds and Jorginho converted a 94th-minute spot-kick to seal a 3-2 win for Chelsea.

The last-minute winner was particularly important as Premier League leaders Manchester City and second-placed Liverpool both won on Saturday, beating Wolves and Aston Villa respectively.

Liverpool maintained their impressive run of form with a 1-0 victory over Steven Gerrard’s Villa and Alexander-Arnold was asked about Chelsea’s last-gasp win after the Anfield clash.

‘Didn’t know that,’ Alexander-Arnold told Premier League productions. ‘Just seen that they scored a last-minute penalty.

‘But we can’t complain because we did the same last week. That’s the title race really, these things happen and it makes it exciting.

‘Three teams going for it this year it seems like. We have to keep winning. This is an important period. The games come thick and fast.

‘So, any sort of slip-up right now will be detrimental. We want to be top of the league come March and April to push in during the final run-in.’

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was delighted his side were able to secure the three points at Stamford Bridge but admitted the Blues were forced to ‘suffer’ against Leeds.

‘When you play against Leeds you get wild games and you have to accept it,’ Tuchel said. ‘I liked the first half a lot and the way we found solutions.

‘The result was the result, we gave a cheap penalty away and had to live with it. The speech at half-time was to do it again and not worry about the result.

‘We made the game very intense in every position. Once we turned things around in our favour I had a feeling after the last two results [the defeat at West Ham and draw with Zenit] that we did not want to lose it and we did not take the risks anymore.

‘Leeds played stronger and stronger and they were taking risks because they had nothing to lose.

‘I’m happy we turned it around this time. We had to suffer. We needed this feeling back in the dressing room.’
