Lionesses fans couldn’t resist rubbing salt in Australia’s wounds on Wednesday after England beat the hosts 3-1 to reach the World Cup final Down Under.
Ella Toone scored the opener for Sarina Wiegman’s side before Sam Kerr netted a stunning equaliser midway through the second half to revive Australia’s hopes of reaching the final.
After Lauren Hemp launched England back ahead in the 71st minute, Alessia Russo put the game beyond doubt late on with a third goal, firing the Lionesses into their first ever World Cup final.
Ecstatic England fans poured on to Twitter to celebrate the achievement, and several supporters used memes to wind up the tournament hosts following their World Cup exit.
The two countries have locked horns across sport plenty of times this summer, and until now Australia have boasted the bragging rights.

Australia’s Test cricket captain Pat Cummins prevented England from winning back the Ashes by drawing the heated series 2-2 earlier this month, and in netball the Australian Diamonds triumphed 61-45 against England in the World Cup final.
After the Lionesses’ triumphant win, fans piled on to Twitter to stick it to the Aussies.
From SpongeBob to Leonardo DiCaprio memes, Lionesses supporters had plenty of fun winding up the Matildas.
One fan, referencing the washout at Old Trafford which prevented England’s cricket team from winning the crucial fourth Ashes Test last month, tweeted a picture of Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson with the caption: ‘When you realise rain can’t save Australia this time’.
Another fan posted a picture of lion maiming a kangaroo, writing: ‘Well done girls!’
Meanwhile, Australia fans were up in arms over England’s aggressive start to the match, tweeting their disgust after a handful of robust challenges from the Lionesses.

Matildas fans accused the Lionesses of being cowardly in their approach on Wednesday
‘Actual lionesses are brave,’ on Australian fan tweeted. ‘I don’t know what this English squad thinks they are but they strike me more like cowardly dogs.’
Another added: ‘Looks like the England women’s team brought their rugby skills to the football field!’
England will now face Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday, with Lauren James set to returning following her two-match ban for stamping on Nigeria star Michelle Alozie.
Spain beat Sweden 2-1 in dramatic fashion on Tuesday to secure their first ever Women’s World Cup final, as Olga Carmona netted seconds after Rebecka Blomqvist’s 88th minute equaliser.
