Lionesses confuse Sydney stadiums in awkward faux pas

Lionesses pay tribute to traditional Aboriginal owners of the land ahead of World Cup clash against Denmark in Sydney… but get the wrong stadium!

  • England play Denmark at the Sydney Football Stadium on Friday
  • The Lionesses’ social media team tweeted a picture of Stadium Australia
  • The two venues are approximately 20 kilometres apart

England’s social media team made a rather embarrassing faux pas ahead of the Lionesses’ game against Denmark, as they confused Stadium Australia with the new Sydney Football Stadium.

The Lionesses official Twitter account shared an acknowledgement of country ahead of the Group D clash on Friday.

‘Our second FIFA Women’s World Cup group match will take place at the Sydney / Gadigal Football Stadium,’ the post read.

‘We respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land, the Gadigal of the Eora Nation, and pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.’

The accompanying picture, however, was of Stadium Australia – or Accor Stadium, as it is known for sponsorship reasons – instead of the Sydney Football Stadium.

The new Sydney Football Stadium cost $828 million and opened its doors last year

Stadium Australia was the host venue for the Matildas’ opening the game of the World Cup

The site of the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympics, Stadium Australia is located in Sydney’s western suburb of Homebush, while the Sydney Football Stadium is in Moore Park, 20 kilometres to the east.

The former host the Matildas’ opening game of the tournament against the Republic of Ireland last week and will be the stage of the Women’s World Cup final later this month.

The new Sydney Football Stadium, meanwhile, is the new crown  jewel among Sydney’s sporting venues.

Built on the same site that host the Sydney Football Stadium between 1988 and 2019, the new $828million venue opened its door last year.

The NRL’ Sydney Roosters are Allianz Stadium’s main tenants, along with the NSW Warathas and Sydney FC in Super Rugby and the A-League respectively.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs had hoped to join the trio after New South Wales government scrapped plans for a $810million refurbishment of Accor Stadium two years ago.

But after a protracted saga the NRL giants have remained at Accor Stadium this season.
