Lionel Messi might be stepping onto a football pitch as a Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) player for the first time on Friday night, as the Parisians take on Brest in Ligue 1. You’ll be able to watch Messi’s debut live in the UK – here’s everything you need to know.

Messi signed a two-year contract with PSG earlier this month, after leaving Barcelona for free.

Barcelona were forced to release their talisman as they were unable to keep him under La Liga’s financial fair play rules.

Messi scored 672 goals in 778 games for Barca, and lifted 35 trophies with the Catalans.

PSG will be hoping to finally claim the Champions League trophy under Messi’s leadership.

But, first PSG will be focussed on reclaiming the Ligue 1 title, after losing out to Lille last season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have won both of their opening two league games this season.

They came back from an early scare against Troyes to win 2-1 in the opening game of the season, before beating Strasbourg 4-2 last weekend.

Now, PSG face Brest, who narrowly avoided relegation from the top flight last year.

Messi could make his debut on Friday night, but he faces a late fitness test before the match.

The club still haven’t decided whether he’ll play or not, Pochettino confirmed.

“We haven’t decided the squad yet,” he said. We will assess whether Messi can be a part of it.

“Everything is positive. There is a good atmosphere in the squad and he has settled in well and quickly. There is a very good feeling.”

Ahead of making his debut, Messi said: “The only thing I told [PSG sporting director] Leonardo was that I hoped my family would be at ease in Paris. Of course, it’s a new experience but I’m ready for that.

“At the end of the day, it’s football and that’s the same in the whole world.

“I have friends here and that makes things easier. I’m really happy. I want to begin now, to know my teammates, to have contact with all of them.

“This is new for us but I am ready. In the sporting aspect and for my family, it’s an amazing city and it is beautiful.”
