Lionel Messi has now surpassed the world_record_egg Instagram account for the most-liked post on the platform. It was back in January 2019 when a novel social media experiment was undertaken by an account posting just a single picture of an uncracked egg.
The account wanted to beat the previous world record held by Kylie Jenner, which stood at 18 million. Just a week after the picture of the egg was posted, the picture reached it’s goal and has since gained over 55 million likes.
Cristiano Ronaldo threatened to topple the egg post’s position on top of Instagram with a famous snap of the Portuguese superstar alongside Messi playing chess in an advertisement for Louis Vuitton. That post reached 42 million likes, but Messi quickly surpassed his football rival following Argentina’s World Cup win on Sunday.
And he’s now taken the title for the most-liked upload in Instagram history by knocking off the picture of an egg from the top spot with 56 million people showing their appreciation for the post. Messi’s fans had infiltrated the egg post with some urging them to untick the like button to help the Argentina hero out.
A British man named Chris Godfrey had taken credit for the record egg post and explained back in 2019 the reason behind his post. “An egg has no gender, race, or religion,” Godfrey said. “It’s universal.”
Messi’s post shows him being lifted aloft by his Argentina team-mates while he is lifting the World Cup trophy. It also includes a number of different pictures of him holding the trophy up high, along with the caption: “CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!.
“So many times I dreamed it, so much I wanted it that I still don’t fall, I can’t believe it… Thank you so much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us.
“We prove once again that Argentinians when we fight together and united we are able to achieve what we aim. The merit is of this group, which is above individuals, is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also the one of all Argentinians…
“We did it!!! LET’S GO ARGENTINA DAMN!!!!! We’re seeing each other very soon.”
