Lineker jokes about ITV ‘curse’ with England’s World Cup last-16 game not on BBC

BBC host Gary Lineker aimed a cheeky dig at rivals ITV after England booked their place in the last-16 of the World Cup.

The Three Lions thrashed Wales 3-0 in their final group game in Qatar in a match that was screened live on BBC. Goals from Marcus Rashford either side of a Phil Foden strike proved enough for England to grab their second win of the tournament – which was also their second on BBC in the last eight days.

By contrast, ITV had the misfortune to show England's dismal 0-0 draw with USA last Friday night, continuing a luckless run for the broadcaster.

Since 1998, 28 of England's games at major tournaments have been shown on ITV. Remarkably, the Three Lions have won only six of those matches – something Gareth Southgate will be hoping to change at the weekend.

Lineker stunned fans by plugging the channel's coverage of Sunday's match against Senegal, while also making a sly allusion to the supposed curse that hangs over England.

Are England cursed on ITV? Let us know in the comments section.

He said: "England finished top and will take on Senegal at 7pm on Sunday. And that's on live on, well – uh – ITV. Oh well." Football fans are convinced Lineker was talking about the infamous ITV curse.

"It’s the ITV curse Gary. England are always p*** poor on ITV," one user wrote. Another said: "As a kid everyone thought England playing on ITV in a tournament was bad luck. Let’s hope that curse is lifted on Sunday."

Someone else said: "@ITV showing the next England match vs Senegal, surely what can go wrong? #QatarWorldCup2022 #itv curse." While a fourth fan added: "ITV curse is real I swear."

England will take on Senegal in the last-16 at 7pm on Sunday night after the Lions of Teranga overcame Ecuador to book their spot in the knockout rounds.

Goals from English-based pair Ismaila Sarr and Kalidou Koulibaly did the job as Aliou Cisse's men finished second in Group B behind the Netherlands.
