Leon Bailey says it’ll be ‘difficult to sleep’ after crying over open goal miss

Leon Bailey was left in floods of tears while laying face-down on the Villa Park turf after missing a golden chance to secure all three points as Aston Villa hosted Wolves.

The Jamaica international rounded Jose Sa after Danny Ings had cancelled out a fine Daniel Podence opener – but his weak shot trickled the wrong side of the post.

With the final whistle sounding with the scores level, the 25-year-old was left crestfallen that he couldn't clinch the Midlands derby and fire Unai Emery's side to within a point of Chelsea.

Quickly taking to Instagram after, he said: "I am really sorry Villans.

"I feel at blame for not coming away with all 3 points tonight. Its really hard to take & I'm very disappointed in myself.

"Surely will be very difficult to sleep tonight but I'll try and keep by head up. Thank you for the great support tonight."

Fans have come out in force to back the forward despite his failed chance to score – feeling bad for the former Bayer Leverkusen star.

One fan said: "It’s not like he intentionally missed and it was actually pleasing to see his reaction and how desperately he wanted to get the win for us. Unfortunate."

A second added: "Chin up Leon, look forwards and put in some top performances."

Bailey joined Villa back in 2021 and has gone on to score just five goals across his 36 appearances in all competitions.

That has come after he scored 15 goals in his final season in Germany, which led to a fee in the region of £30million when he swapped the Bundesliga for the Premier League.

The draw was Emery's first as Villa boss form his sixth match in charge, with tests against Stevenage in the FA Cup and Leeds in the Premier League up next.
