Leicester run into major Marsch obstacle as history repeats itself

Brendan Rodgers departs as Leicester manager after Foxes slide into bottom three

Leicester City’s talks with Jesse Marsch have reportedly collapsed after the former Leeds United boss ruled himself out of the running to replace Brendan Rodgers. The Foxes are now weighing up their alternative options, including following the recent Premier League trend of bringing in an experienced boss until the end of the season.

Leicester parted ways with Rodgers earlier this month after the club slipped further into the relegation zone following a torrid run of form. Following their loss to fellow strugglers Bournemouth on Saturday, the club now sit in 19th place in the Premier League and they are just two points above bottom-of-the-table Southampton.

The Foxes are keen to appoint a manager as soon as possible, shortlisting Marsch as a top target following Rodgers’ exit. However, despite extended talks between the two parties, the American has told Leicester that he does not believe he is the right candidate, according to the Telegraph.

Marsch withdrew himself from the recruitment process after watching Leicester lose at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, feeling that his style would not suit the club and what they need if the club do face the drop to the Championship.

The 49-year-old also feels that his recruitment style would not suit the Foxes and the players that the club truly requires if they need to return to the Premier League, in the worst-case scenario. Marsch had visited the training ground prior to the Bournemouth defeat before holding talks with his coaching staff to discuss the opportunity and whether they are the best fit, informing Leicester on Sunday morning.

Though they aren’t the only club to have missed out on signing the former RB Salzburg boss this season, with Southampton coming close to securing his signature in February after sacking Ralph Hasenhuttl. Negotiations, once again, broke down at a late stage at St Marys’, though that was reported to be because of contract length rather than suitability.

The Foxes are now assessing their other options, having interviewed several managers last week along with Marsch. One contender being heavily considered is former Aston Villa boss Dean Smith, who was sacked by Norwich City earlier this season.

More experienced coaches have also been linked with the vacancy, including Sam Allardyce and Martin O’Neill. Leicester have also reportedly discussed potentially appointing Rafael Benitez, though he is also being considered by West Ham given that manager David Moyes is continuing to feel the heat at the club.
