Leicester fans ironically cheered their own team’s defensive actions after they managed to clear a poor corner from Tottenham star Ivan Perisic in their 6-2 loss to Spurs on Saturday night. The Foxes have a terrible record from set-pieces, something that was again on display at Spurs.

Leicester have gained a reputation for performing poorly when it comes to corners and free kicks with the goals conceded to Spurs the second and third time the club have fallen to a set-piece this season. Twenty one of the 59 goals they conceded last season came in a similar manner. Manager Brendan Rodgers has gained a reputation for failing to prepare his team properly to deal with dead ball situations, something that has continued at the King Power.

The Foxes sought to try and address this weakness recently with Lars Knudsen brought in as a set-piece coach. His methods do not appear to be working yet given the team’s demonstratable issues against Spurs. In truth, they could have conceded more with Dejan Kulusevski finding the net directly from the corner spot, however, the goal was somewhat controversially ruled out for a foul on goalkeeper Danny Ward.

And Leicester were even mocked by their own fans for their poor record, with supporters inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ironically cheering when their side managed to head a poor Perisic corner away.

The cheers make a mockery of the work already undertaken by new set piece coach Knudsen. The Dane comes with a good reputation having worked for the US national team, the Danish youth team and Midtjylland.

Speaking on his arrival Rodgers was keen to talk up his pedigree but stressed he would not work miracles overnight. “He currently works for the USA national team as set-piece coach,” he said. “He worked before with the Danish national team and was also an assistant manager in Denmark.

“He came very highly recommended. Lars worked closely with the guy who has been appointed as set-piece coach for the German national team (Mads Buttgereit), they worked very closely together. We’re delighted to have him in. It took a long time for him to come in. He’s settled in very well but he’s not coming in with a magic wand.

“He’s going to give us a lot of analysis and he’s a very skilled coach. If you don’t get first contact, a set-piece coach can’t make a difference to that.”

Leicester supporters will hope the club’s current set-piece woes ease soon with the Foxes rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table. They have just one point from seven matches and own the worst defensive record in the division having conceded 22 times.
