Double Dutch disaster for Leeds United as they are thrashed by Ajax twice in a DAY… with Marcelo Bielsa’s men conceding SEVEN across two pre-season friendlies
- Leeds United faced Ajax in two friendlies on Wednesday but lost both of them
- Their U23 side went down to a 3-1 loss earlier on in the day before a 4-0 defeat
- Marcelo Bielsa fielded big names in both games as they let in seven goals
Leeds United were given a quick opportunity to avenge their defeat to Ajax on Wednesday as they played their second friendly of the day – but it proved to be a double Dutch disaster as they let in seven goals across both matches.
Marcelo Bielsa’s men were beaten 3-1 by the Eredivisie giants in the afternoon with an Under-23 side featuring a handful of big name players – including Kalvin Phillips, Helder Costa and Liam Cooper.
The Whites regrouped and prepared to face them once again in the evening – but fared even worse as the senior squad were thrashed 4-0.
Leeds United were beaten by Ajax twice in the same day in two different friendlies
The Whites conceded a total of seven goals as they rotated teams across two line-ups
Going up against Jong Ajax first up, Leeds netted their only goal of the two games through Max Dean – who won a penalty and dusted himself off to slot it away, which turned out to be a consolation after the hosts had stormed into a 3-0 lead.
And it was deja vu in the evening contest as former Everton man Davy Klaassen notched his side ahead after just two minutes having won possession high up the pitch and slotted home.
Midway through the first period, Perr Schuurs doubled their lead as the defender played a one-two with Dusan Tadic and lifted the ball over Illan Meslier.
Leeds had a couple of chances to get back into it as Raphinha and Robin Koch both went close with efforts, but Ajax downed them with a sucker-punch as a shot from distance flew in to make it three before half time.
Ryan Gravenberch celebrates after adding a third goal in the evening game in Amsterdam
It was not an ideal way for Marcelo Bielsa (R) to prepare his team ahead of their Premier League opener against Manchester United on August 14
Ryan Gravenberch was 30 yards out but opted to go for the spectacular and that’s exactly what he delivered as his rasping shot swerved into the top corner.
Ajax were able to enjoy the second period but still found time for a fourth towards the end of the game – with Danilo exchanging passes before curling past Meslier.
It was hardly ideal preparations for Bielsa’s men in their penultimate friendly of the summer before opening their Premier League campaign away at Manchester United on August 14.
The Yorkshire outfit have already made a handful of acquisitions ahead of the new season – Barcelona’s Junior Firpo, Chelsea midfielder Adam Bate while finally making Jack Harrison’s loan move from Man City permanent after three seasons.
