Leeds to hail Bielsa with ‘permanent tribute’ at Elland Road despite sacking him

Leeds United will hail Marcelo Bielsa with a 'permanent tribute' at Elland Road despite giving him the sack.

The Yorkshire club have parted ways with the Argentine manager following an extraordinary run of results in the Premier League which has seen them concede 20 goals in their last five games.

It has been a poor season overall for Bielsa who leaves the club 16th in the table and just two points above the relegation zone.

However, having taken charge of the club in 2018 and guided them back to the English top-flight, a long-awaited target, he is cemented as a legend with the fanbase.

As such, it was revealed in the club statement that they will honour him in some way at their home ground, with "more information to be released in due course".

Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani also said: “This has been the toughest decision I have had to make during my tenure at Leeds United, taking into account all the success Marcelo has had at the club.

“With Marcelo as our head coach, we had three incredible campaigns and the good times returned to Elland Road.

"He changed the culture of the club and brought a winning mentality to us all.

"The moments created, particularly in the 2019/20 season and winning promotion to the Premier League, will of course live long in all our memories, myself and the fans included.

“However, I have to act in the best interest of the club and I believe a change is required now in order to secure our Premier League status. Recent results and performances have not met our expectations.

"Naturally, myself, along with everyone else at the club would like to thank Marcelo for his efforts and achievements and we wish him the very best for the future."

Leeds said they will aim to make an announcement on Bielsa's replacement on Monday (February 28).

It is highly anticipated that Jesse Marsch will be the man to take charge.

The American is free and available after himself being sacked by Bundesliga side RB Leipzig last December, just four months into his reign.

He will have 12 games to turn around Leeds' fortunes as they look to avoid a return to Championship.
