Leeds ridiculed and told Karen Carney was right after Crawley FA Cup humiliation
Leeds United fans have been told that Karen Carney was right in her assessment of their promotion following their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Crawley in the third round of the FA Cup.
The former Arsenal, Chelsea and England midfielder said in her role as a BT Sport pundit that the enforced break in the 2019/20 Championship season played a large role in their successful title charge.
After her thoughts were shared by the official Leeds Twitter account, the club were forced to address abuse sent in her direction by annoyed supporters.
Having deleted her own account, rival fans have now agreed with her statement on their return to the Premier League.
One supporter wrote: “Karen Carney was right.”
A second wrote: “Karen Carney was right. Fell apart after Christmas.”
A third stated: “Looks like Karen Carney was right about Leeds, who’d have thought?”
With a fourth adding: “Karen Carney was right… falling apart.”
After suggesting that Leeds got promoted ‘because of covid’ she questioned whether the high intensity of their performances ‘might blow up at the end of season’.
Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani then stated: "I'm very sorry Karen was abused on social media.
“I wanted to defend my club and our players from a comment which I felt was harsh from Karen on air. Our tweet wasn't offensive – simply stating that we won the league by 10 points.
"We honestly didn't expect such a reaction and we are sorry she experienced that.
“I respect her as a person and a pundit and I hope she understands that we just want to defend our club, we are a family.
"I hope the abuse stops and we can move forward and I hope Karen will be our guest at Elland Road soon – I'd like to meet personally with her."
