Leeds fans were left furious by a decision which went against their side as they fell a goal behind against Nottingham Forest.

The two relegation-battling sides met in a crunch clash at the City Ground on Sunday with plenty at stake, with Leeds teetering just above the drop zone while Forest sit two points ahead of them. Forest got the upper hand 14 minutes in when Brennan Johnson put his side in front.

Morgan Gibbs-White whipped in a free-kick from the right flank which Leeds managed to clear to the edge of their box, but Johnson was ready and waiting to connect with a volley which zipped past Illan Meslier into the bottom corner. But the lead up to his goal was filled with controversy.

It was a foul by Leeds' Pascal Struijk on Johnson which earned Forest the free-kick from which they scored. However, replays showed Johnson looked to have strayed into an offside position when the ball was played, which would have meant a free-kick to Leeds and danger averted.

Yet officials failed to spot the offside, while Struijk was booked for what was a fairly soft challenge. VAR did not get involved in the incident as it didn't directly lead to a goal. Had the incident occurred from the free-kick, they could have reviewed it.

The outcome caused plenty of debate and angry responses among Leeds fans on social media. "What is the point of VAR clear offside leads to free kick," one wrote, as another raged: "Hang on a f****** sec where the f*** was VAR there? He's offside before the free kick was given."

Some knew the rules which VAR are governed by, as one explained: "VAR can't get involved he was offside when he was fouled, it's got to be the same as rugby I'm afraid."

But another felt it was part of a clear agenda against their side, writing: "So the free kick came from an offside player. And VAR cant get involved because…its Leeds."
