Laura Woods breaks down in tears live on air as she announces her departure from talkSPORT and struggles to hold it together following Ally McCoist’s tribute

Laura Woods broke down in tears live on air while announcing her departure from talkSPORT’s Breakfast Show. 

Woods – who has hosted the flagship show for three years – informed the talkSPORT listeners she would be leaving during Wednesday’s show. 

The 35-year-old confirmed she would be making her final appearance on Wednesday June 28 before thanking her fans and colleagues for their support over the years.

However, Woods was overcome with emotion and broke down in tears when discussing her time on the show – saying she’s felt ‘so lucky to spend her mornings talking about sport’. 

The broadcaster was also teary-eyed when Ally McCoist praised her for making him feel like he’s 18 again’ before insisting they’ll be ‘good pals forever’.

Woods broke down in tears on air while announcing her departure from the Breakfast Show

Woods started her announcement by saying: ‘I have some news for our lovely listeners. So, here goes. 

‘Obviously as you guys know, I have been a listener for what feels like a lifetime and I got the job reviewing the paper for Alan Brazil in 2017. It was 30 minutes a week and I loved it. It was the most exciting moment of my career and I absolutely adored it.’ 

Woods began to choke up as she said: ‘Six years I’ve been here now and six years talkSPORT has been my home. I’ve been so lucky to spend all of my mornings sat here talking about sport.’

The radio host had to pause and flap her hands in the air to stop herself from crying before continuing: ‘I love it obviously, it’s just great isn’t it. So basically, I have been trying to write this for a while and get all the words down but it’s been really hard. 

‘But, I have decided it’s time to move on. Two weeks today will be my final show.’

Woods went on to say: ‘You lot, our listeners, have given me so much comfort and guided me through some of my toughest moments, without even realising it. So I wanted to thank you personally for that. I will miss it dearly. Even the Spurs fans.

‘For what feels like a lifetime I’ve been a listener of talkSPORT. For the last six years, it’s been my home, where we get to spend our mornings talking about sport. There’s nothing better. I know I will never find a job like this. It’s unique.

‘Three years as the host of this amazing breakfast show, three bits of silverware for the trophy cabinet and record listening figures. I’m very proud of what we achieved here. One thing’s for sure: I will always be part of this family at talkSPORT.’

Woods went on to thank McCoist personally by saying: ‘Ally, I wanted to say to you especially, I genuinely feel like I’ve won the lottery getting to work so closely with you like we do.

‘When the entire world is talking about one sporting event, me and you just sit and these chairs and talk about it with each other. That’s been the privilege of my life.

‘I don’t think you’ll ever really know how much I’ve learned from just watching you and just being around you. All this natural warmth you have, and humour.

‘You make me feel like I’m this kid watching A Question of Sport, in awe of you. That happens regularly.

‘You are the epitome of super. You are just everything super. Thank you for always getting the best out of me, Ally McCoist.

‘I don’t think I’d be anywhere near the broadcaster I am today if it wasn’t for you genuinely holding my hand.’

Woods finished by saying: ‘For now, no more 3am alarms, which is just wonderful. But one thing is for sure is that I wanted to make you know that I’ll always be a part of this family. I will pop back whenever I can. I adore you all. Thank you.

‘I’m going to have a holiday, a long sleep and I’ll make a decision on what’s next for me. So again, I can’t say it enough, thank you. Thank you, everyone, for having me. I’ll really miss you.’

However, the real waterworks came when McCoist paid tribute to Woods and thanked her for making him feel ’18 again’.

McCoist said: ‘I know I speak for everyone through that window over there and all the listeners, Laura. It has been an absolute pleasure. I cannot tell you how much I’ve loved it. I’ve loved it from start to finish. I love you dearly, I know everyone behind that window loves you dearly.

‘You’ve been an absolute breath of fresh air. You’ve made me feel 18 again in the nicest possible way and then on a Thursday I feel 84 when I’m working with [Alan] Brazil. But you made me feel 18 [again].

‘There was an inevitability about it, dare I say it, because we all knew you were going to other places and you were going to keep moving in a northerly direction.’
